The Long Dark

Survive a frozen wilderness through careful decisions about warmth, food, water, rest, and supplies.
The Long Dark

The Long Dark Survival Experience

Survive alone in a frozen Canadian wilderness after a geomagnetic disaster. Hunger, thirst, fatigue, and cold turn decisions about clothing, supplies, travel, and rest into a continual balance of risk and necessity.

Survival Loop and Progression

Hunt, fish, trap, scavenge, and maintain equipment while exploring interconnected regions. Existing buildings provide refuge, and temporary snow shelters can be constructed for protection outdoors; this is not a conventional base-building sandbox. Survival Mode offers open-ended living, while WINTERMUTE is a separate story experience and Challenges provide specific objectives. Paid expansion content adds further regions and activities.

Modes and Availability

Available as a paid solo game on Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. On PC, Survival Mode can be purchased separately or with WINTERMUTE; check the chosen edition for included content. Survival normally ends with permadeath, but supported versions offer optional Cheat Death with escalating penalties in eligible difficulties. Misery and Challenges exclude that option. WINTERMUTE instead uses saved progress and reloads.

Death & Recovery
Survival Mode normally uses permadeath. On versions with Cheat Death, eligible difficulties allow up to three revivals with escalating penalties and partial equipment recovery; declining it ends the run. Cheat Death is unavailable in Misery and Challenges. WINTERMUTE does not use Survival Mode permadeath and instead permits saving and reloading.
